Why were the specific images chosen & what are they?
Stefan: All sheets are printed with intricate patterns abstracting the creation of the universe, starting with the big bang and making their way through the creation of the earth, the beginning of plant, animal and human life all the way to the digital revolution.
Where can someone see one of these on exhibit?
Stefan: The prototype was bought by the Graphic Design Museum in Holland and will be exhibited there. There will be other possibilities to see it, right now there are a number of institutions who are interested.
How and why did you start to make furniture?
Stefan: While I was in Indonesia our studio was renovated in NYC and this studio needed furniture. The furniture I loved I could not afford (I had looked at a beautiful Campagna brothers lounge chair, it went for $ 125,000.00, hmmm), and the stuff I could afford I did not love. So we designed it ourselved in Bali, took a reasonable budget per piece and had them made. Other people liked them so we had some more made. The Darwin Chair is one of these, manufactured now by Droog in Amsterdam.
What was the inspiration behind the Darwin chair?
Stefan: We are graphic designers, we have learned to speak the language of graphic design. The idea to take this language of graphics (ephemeral, transformation, storytelling) and apply it to a piece of furniture, to a field we don’t know, seemed appealing.
